About Maylys

SSI Mermaid Instructor and underwater artist, helping women discover the healing power of the underwater world.

Hi, I'm Maylys.

I grew up in the Netherlands, lived across the UK and Canada, and somehow found my way to the coast of Costa Rica, which if you've ever stood at the edge of the Pacific here, will make complete sense.

I found mermaiding the way most good things happen: by accident. A flyer at a coffee shop, a vague sense of "that looks like fun," and a personality that has never been able to say no to something a little out of the ordinary. I've always been drawn to all things fantasy, modelling, circus arts, cosplay… the things that let you step into a different version of yourself! Mermaiding seemed like it belonged in that world. I also had a traumatic experience with water as a child that I had been carrying for a long time, and something about this felt like it might help with that.

What I didn't expect was how completely natural it would feel.

The dolphin kick, which is the mermaid swimming technique, turned out to be something my body naturally already knew how to do. The breath work was harder because of my trauma, but everything else just clicked. And then I did my ocean mermaid certification, got into open water with a tail, and oh wow… something shifted that I still find difficult to fully explain! I've tried scuba diving, and discovered that the underwater world is astonishing, but the diving gear keeps you feeling like a visitor. A human who happens to be down here temporarily. Mermaiding is completely different. With a tail and nothing between you and the water, you stop feeling like a visitor and gain a sense of freedom... You feel like you belong there! Like the fish aren't watching a strange creature pass through their world. They're just swimming WITH you.

I crave the water now in a way I never expected. It balances and heals me. It does something that I can only describe as realignment. Not through effort or meditation, but just through connection. Through being in it.

That transformation was mine, and it looked the way it looked because of who I am and what I carried into the water with me. Yours will look different. Maybe it'll be about healing something. Maybe it'll just be about joy, or adventure, or finally doing that one thing you've been curious about for years. I don't know what the water will give you. But in my experience, it always gives you something!

Every woman has something to gain from this. That's what I believe, and that's why I'm here. To help guide you through that incredible journey.

I can't wait to meet you in the water!
